Group Discussion Questions

  1. What do you think are traits of a good leader? How do we tend to evaluate and rank leaders in our society today?
  2. What two images of spiritual leadership does Paul share in 1 Corinthians 4:1-2? What are implications of the two images?
  3. Why should we not judge? In what ways are we to judge and in what ways are we not to judge?
  4. According to 4:6-7, why should we not boast and compare one person with another? How does grace counter comparisons and pride?
  5. Describe the contrast between the people in verse eight and those described in verses 9-13. What does it mean to be a fool for Christ? How do you understand what Paul is saying in this section and how does it apply today?
  6. Paul’s final image is of being a “spiritual father.” What are implications of this image for good leadership? For all of us?
  7. Paul told the Corinthians to imitate him in the ways of Christ. Is there anyone you try to imitate in a similar way? What is one important way you need to grow spiritually so your life is more worthy of imitation?
