Group Discussion Questions

  1. What are Paul’s guidelines for sexual intimacy in marriage (verses 2-5)? Why are these guidelines important? What hindrances could some couples experience in keeping these guidelines? How could these guidelines solve some of the issues in our society today?
  2. What does it mean that “The wife does not have authority over her own body” and “The husband does not have authority over his own body?” How does this impact a couple’s relationship?
  3. What does Paul mean by “Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned them?” Does this mean a person should not look for a new job? What are implications for your life right now?
  4. How are we the “Lord’s freed person” as verse 22 says? How does this identity impact how we view our current situations in this life, including who we work for?
  5. Why does Paul write in verses 32-33 that “An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs – how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world.” Is Paul saying people shouldn’t get married? What should you do if you are married? What does this text say about the value of singleness?
  6. What does Paul mean when he says “The time is short and that the form of this world is passing away?” What are implications of this truth for our lives today in terms of living in our current situations? Where should our focus be?
