Group and Family Discussion Questions

5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:5-9.

  1. What are your initial reactions as you read Matthew 21:1-16? Is there a character you can most relate to? Why is that?
  2. How would you summarize this story? What’s unusual about the way the landowner pays his workers? What word or principle comes to mind when you read it?
  3. Have you ever said or heard other people say “that’s not fair?” Is there an instance or situation where you have used that phrase (or thought it) recently? Share the story. Why do we use that phrase so much? Who do we focus on when we say those words?
  4. What do we learn about God in this story (verse 15)?
  5. Why are we tempted to complain when we don’t get what we think we deserve? On a broader context, do we really want to get what we “deserve” from God (Romans 6:23)?
  6. In light of this story where should we keep our focus? How does our focus on God increase our peace and joy? Who can you serve in Christ’s name this week?
  7. Can you remember the previous parables we’ve discussed and the main points of the stories? Here they are to jog your memory: the story of the bags of gold, the story of the merciful Samaritan, the story of the rich fool, the story of the prodigal son, the story of the unforgiving servant, the story of the shrewd steward.
