Immanuel (presence) in Isaiah: the sign

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14


Immanuel (presence) in Matthew: the incarnation

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.” Matthew 1:22-23


Immanuel (presence) for us: the gift

*Receive God’s gift — to be present in your life

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John  3:16

*Trust God’s presence to be “with us” today

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

*Expect God’s full presence tomorrow

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. Revelation 21:3

  1. Why is “presence” such a powerful reality for us as people? What is it about the presence of another person that brings comfort and security? When have you really appreciated the presence of another person?
  2. What, if anything, has the name “Immanuel” meant to you in the past? What does the name mean to you today?
  3. How was “Immanuel” a sign in the time of the prophet Isaiah (see Isaiah 7:14)?
  4. How is Jesus “Immanuel”? (Matthew 1:18-24)
  5. Today, how can we experience the gift of God’s presence in our lives?
  6. In what ways does the promise that we will one day be in God’s full presence impact you now (Revelation 21:3)?
