3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

 

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

 

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

 

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

 

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

 

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

 

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God


10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

Group and Family Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to be “blessed” by God? Why would you want that?
  2. What does it mean to be “poor in spirit”? Can you list examples of people in the Bible who were “poor in spirit”? How is this often the first step to recovery from our sins? The first step to salvation? Have you taken this step?
  3. What kind of “mourning” is Jesus talking about when he says, “blessed are those who mourn”? To what extent have your mourned over your sins? Others’ sins? How could we grow in mourning? What is the reward for mourning?
  4. To what kinds of behavior does Jesus refer when he promises, “blessed are the meek”? In what contexts is it most difficult for you to be meek?
  5. What is “righteousness” in Matthew 5:6? What do you think it looks like to hunger and thirst for righteousness? How could we increase our desire for righteousness?
  6. How can we become more merciful? What sorts of actions show mercy?
  7. What makes it difficult to be “pure in heart”?
  8. What kind of things does a “peacemaker” do? How could we improve our peacemaking? Is there a relationship or person with whom you feel convicted to be a peacemaker?
  9. While it is uncomfortable to be persecuted, it does bring blessing from God. Have you ever been persecuted for your faith? To what extent are you wiling to be persecuted?
  10. In reviewing all eight beatitudes, where is the Spirit of God most convicting you to grow?
