     Message Outline

I am a missionary

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven;

 if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

John 20:21-23

Commissioned by Jesus Christ

Empowered by the Holy Spirit

To represent Jesus in the world

Group and Family Discussion Questions

  1. Have you, or someone close to you, been commissioned for a role such as military service? How did it feel to you at the time? What was the significance of the commissioning?
  2. Jesus says we are “sent ones,” which is another way of saying “missionary.” If you are a believer in Jesus, how you do respond to the truth that you are a missionary? Have you ever seen yourself as a missionary? What are implications of being a missionary?
  3. What authority do we have to be missionaries?
  4. What resource has Jesus given us to be his missionaries? How does that reality strengthen you?
  5. What responsibility has Jesus given us according to John 20:23? If it is true that only God forgives sins based on what Jesus did, how can “we” forgive sins?
  6. Where and to whom has Jesus sent you? Consider the three contexts of daily life (home, work and school), church (groups, gatherings and ministries) and the world (neighbors and nations). What names of people come to your mind in each context?
  7. Since Jesus has commissioned you as a missionary, how will you continue his movement to multiply, to help more people find and follow Christ?
