Group Discussion Questions

  1. Where in your life have fears held you back from something you knew God was directing you to do?
  2. Share a story of faith from your life when you have stepped out in faith for God, whether it was little or big. How was God faithful to you?
  3. What was the direction that God gave to Moses and the 12 scouts? What was God’s mission and promise?
  4. Contrast the reports and direction given by the ten and the two (Caleb and Joshua). How did the ten show fear? How did the two show faith? Be as specific as possible.
  5. How does God commend Caleb (Numbers 14:24)? How is Caleb different?
  6. The ten acted in fear by exaggerating the problems, complaining to others and going back to Egypt (their old life). How do we typically do each of these in our fears today, when we face something we know God wants us to do?
  7. The two acted in faith by trusting in God’s power, presence and promise; believed that he is bigger than the giants, always with us in the battles and will give us victory. How can we grow in our trust in God’s power, presence and promise?
  8. How is God calling you to act in crazy faith? Where specifically do you need to show more crazy faith?

Family Discussion Question

  1. Who are your heroes and why? Do you have any heroes in the Bible? What is it about them that you admire?
  2. Define the word crazy. What about faith (Hebrews 11:1)? Do these words go together?
  3. Read Numbers 13 and 14 together as a family. Who are the heroes in this story?
  4. How are we like the Israelites? What areas of your life are you tempted to go along with the crowd rather than standing up and doing what is right?
  5. What was different about Caleb and Joshua in this story? What were the consequences for Israel’s lack of faith (Numbers 14:21-24, 29-30, 33-34)? How was it different for Caleb and Joshua (verse 30)?
  6. How do you think the truth of verse 14 shaped Caleb’s faith? How can it help you overcome seemingly insurmountable difficulties in your life?
  7. Where have you seen God acting faithfully toward you? What act of faith in obedience to God’s command and calling can you take today?
  8. Reflect on Numbers 14:24. What is God’s promise for those who faithfully follow him?
