Group Discussion Questions

  1. In your lifetime, how have you stepped out in crazy faith and seen God provide?
  2. Jesus took time for solitude with his Father on a regular basis. How do you take time to be alone with God?
  3. Imagine being one of the disciples that day, how would you have been feeling before the miracle?
  4. What faith-challenge did Jesus give the disciples? How would you have felt if you were one of the disciples receiving that challenge?
  5. What did Jesus ask the disciples to do first? How can we bring our “loaves” to Jesus?
  6. Then Jesus gave thanks. How is giving thanks related to crazy faith? How can we give thanks as Jesus did?
  7. Who multiplied the loaves? Who gave them to the people? To whom might God be calling you to “feed” with your “loaves”? How can you give your loaves away? What could you do to step out in crazy faith for God?

Family Discussion Question

  1. Read today’s passage (Matthew 14:13-21) out loud as a family. How would you summarize the story? Do you think that this story is real or make believe?
  2. Describe how you might feel and act if you were one of the disciples that day. What if you were one of the five thousand? What, for you, is the most interesting thing about this story?
  3. What did Jesus do before he performed the miracle? What do we tend to do when we are in want or need? How does Jesus’ example challenge you?
  4. How does verse 20 clarify God’s great love toward us? Is there a time when God blessed you in abundance beyond what you asked or expected?
  5. What miracles have you experienced in your life? What miracles are you expecting from God in your life?
  6. How does your faith intersect God’s involvement in your life (Hebrews 11:1)? Do you really believe that what you actually hope for will happen? Are there any guiding principles that shape God’s active involvement in your life (Jeremiah 29:11; 1 John 5:14-15; James 4:15)?
  7. What were Jesus’ feelings toward the crowd? What does compassion mean? What does it look like? Who can you show compassion toward?
  8. In what areas do you sense God stretching your faith? What next steps do you need to take to grow in the likeness of Jesus and share who He is with the people in your life? What’s stopping you from doing that?
