Quit Looking at the Waves

Matthew 14:22-33

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,  but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Crazy faith hears Jesus in the storm

During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them:

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said

Crazy faith steps out of the boat and walks to Jesus

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

When crazy faith sinks, we cry out to Jesus

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Crazy faith worships Jesus

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

  3. What does Jesus say to the disciples when they see him walking on the water? How do you need to hear those words in your life storms?
  4. Jesus called Peter to come out of the boat onto the water. How might Jesus be calling you to get out of your boat? If a “boat” represents security, safety or comfort, what is your boat?
  5. What might it look like for you, or any of us, to step out our boat and walk on the water to Jesus? What specific faith-step might Jesus be calling you to right now?
  6. Have you ever been sinking and needed to cry out to Jesus? Share that experience. How did Jesus grab your hand?

  2. What’s the most interesting thing about this story to you?
  3. Did the disciples recognize Jesus? Who did they think He was? What was their reaction? How would you have responded? What was Jesus’ response?
  4. What fears are you facing right now? How does Jesus’ response in verse 27 comfort you?
  5. How did Peter respond? What did Jesus say? What is the promise associated with Jesus’ call to come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30 and John 3:16)?
  6. What happened when Peter took his eyes off Jesus? What was he focused on when he began to doubt Jesus’ call to faithfully follow Him? What things are “buffeting” you and taking your attention from Jesus’ call to faith? What circumstance, trial, opportunity, decision or relationship do you need to pursue in faith today?
  7. What happened to the storm when they climbed into the boat? Read Philippians 4:6-7. What promise does God give us in the “storms of life” when we keep our eyes focused on Him?
