Spiritual Growth Under Pressure, Sept. 29 – Oct. 5

Scripture  1 Peter 2:1-10

Song list

Message Outline

Grow up

By getting rid of all your old junk

By craving spiritual milk as newborn babies

Live for God (offer spiritual sacrifices)

By coming to the Lord, the living Stone

By recognizing our new identity in Christ

By responding to Christ, the Cornerstone

Believe = no shame, honor

Not believe = stumble and fall

Tell about God’s greatness

By recognizing our privileged identity in Christ

Chosen family (tribe)

Royal priests

Holy nation

Special people

That he called us out of darkness into his wonderful light

Group Discussion Questions

  1. How do the daily things of life distract you from the more important issues of life? In other words how does busyness distance you from your true identity and clear mission in Christ?
  2. Of the five items mentioned in verse 1, what do you most need to get rid of and why?
  3. How would you rate your desire for God and his Word compared to the craving of a newborn baby for milk? How does “spiritual milk” help us to grow up in our salvation?
  4. How is our identity connected to Jesus’ identity according to verses 4 and 5? Have you ever thought of yourself as a holy priest? How does that make you feel to know you are a priest?
  5. What does it mean to offer “spiritual sacrifices”? What are spiritual sacrifices?
  6. What are the two responses possible to Jesus Christ and the consequences of each (verses 6-8)? What is your response to Jesus Christ?
  7. What is our true identity according to verse 9? Which of the four is most moving to you at this point in your life? Why? What difference would it make in your life if you really saw yourself as a royal priest of the one true God?
  8. What is our clear mission according to verse 9? What is it that we declare? How can we practically do that in our daily lives?

Family Discussion Questions

  1. Because as Christians we have God’s Spirit within us, what does Peter say we should actively work to get rid of in 1 Peter 2:1? What exactly are malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and slander? How can they hurt our spiritual growth?
  2. What happens to a baby when they drink milk? What is the “spiritual milk” that Peter describes in verse 2? What happens to us when we “drink in” God’s Word?
  3. What does Peter say we are being built into (verse 4)? If a building is meant to last, what does it need? How is Jesus described in verse 6?
  4. What are some of the characteristics of Jesus as the “cornerstone”?
  5. How can Jesus be a block that people stumble over (verse 7-8)? In what areas of your life are you disobeying Jesus (maybe the behaviors in verse 1 are a good place to look)?
  6. For younger children: Here’s a link to a children’s song that reminds us to build our house upon the rock of Jesus Christ and the promises associated with putting our faith and trust in Him (Luke 6:46-49): missionbibleclass.org/songs/songs-q-z/wise-man-built-his-house-upon-the-rock
  7. How are Christians described in verse 9? What does Peter say our purpose is in this verse? How can you declare God’s praises in the places you go today and to the people God puts in your path?
  8. How do we receive God’s mercy (John 3:16)?
