Group Discussion Questions

1.When in your life have you felt shaken by the storms of life? What is shaking you now?

2.How does verse six characterize this passage? Who is speaking to whom? What kind of literature is this?

3.Habakkuk gives us five stanzas each with a “doom” or “woe” for the Babylonians. Who could the Babylonians represent today? From each doom we can hear a warning for us to avoid sin; a warning for the ungodly that sin will be judged and an assurance that God will make things right. Identify the kinds of sins being pointed out, and the punishment coming. Then consider what warning we need to take for ourselves.

4.What assurance can we see in the center of our passage (verse 14)? How does this truth give you confidence today?

5.What is the ultimate response in the last verse (verse 20)? How can we respond that way today?

6.How has God answered Habakkuk? And how can we apply his answer to ourselves today?

7.Read Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NET) out loud.

 

Family Discussion Questions

  1. Have you ever done something mean to someone and they in turn have been mean back to you? What does Habakkuk say will happen to the Babylonian nation in verse 8? Can you think of a Bible verse that tells us how we should treat others (Matthew 7:12 NET)?
  2. What does the word “woe” mean?
  3. What five woes does Habakkuk mention in verses 6, 9, 12, 15 and 19? How would you put these troubles in your own words?
  4. What is an idol? What does God say about idols (Exodus 20:3-4 NET)? What idols do you have in your life?
  5. When we make and worship the idols in our lives, who are we really saying is in control of all things (Habakkuk 2:18 NET)? How can these idols control our lives? Read Psalm 86:11. Who does God want our heart to be wholly devoted to?
  6. Gospel Alert: Where does God’s Spirit live today (1 Corinthians 6:19 NET)? How can we have Jesus come into our lives and live with us (John 3:16 NET)?
