Group Discussion Questions

  1. How well would you say you know God? Using the analogy of a marriage relationship, how would you classify the depth of your current relationship of knowing God: just met, first date, in a relationship, engaged, newly weds, 5, 10, 25, or 50th anniversary?
  2. Why would you say that knowing God is the greatest treasure in life? What other things in life compete with knowing God as the greatest treasure (see Jeremiah 9:23-24)?
  3. Read two heart cries for knowing God, Psalm 73:25-26 and Philippians 3:7-10. To what extent do you identify, if at all, with these declarations of passion for God? How would you rate the intensity of your desire to know God? Why do you rate yourself that way?
  4. Knowing God gives us many wonderful jewels. Consider the following and share which ones are most compelling to you right now and why:
  5. Knowing God starts with trusting in Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Have you done that? When?
  6. If knowing God is the greatest treasure then we should go on the greatest quest to get to know him better and better. Jeremiah and David seek to know God (Jeremiah 29:13; Psalms 63:1) and Paul prays to know him (Ephesians 1:17). We can only know him more by spending time with him in his Word and in prayer. What are you willing to do differently to quest to know God?
  7. According to John 14:21, if we obey Jesus’ commands, he will reveal himself to us. At this time, what command are you convicted to obey so you can know God better?

  3. What are some things people boast about or rely on to help them live life (verse 23)? What does God say we should rely on (verse 24)?
  4. In what does God say he delights (verse 24)? What does this tell you about God? What do kindness, justice and righteousness mean to you? Do you delight in these things?
  5. How do we get to know God?
  6. How important is God in your life? What does the writer of Psalm 73:25-26 say about his relationship with God? How does Paul describe the importance of God to him in Philippians 3:8-10? Can you say that about your relationship with Jesus?
  7. What are some of the benefits of knowing God found in these verses: John 17:3; Habakkuk 3:17-19; Psalm 46:1; Daniel 4:35; Proverbs 9:10; 1 Corinthians 13:12?
