Impact 168: Neighbors, August 10-16

Matthew 25:31-46

This Week’s Service

One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)

Your Love Never Fails

Come thou Fount

Never Once

Rock of Ages

All the Poor and  Powerless

Blessed sheep

Come, blessed by the Father, take your inheritance, the kingdom,
prepared from creation

                   For you cared for me.

Cursed goats

Depart, cursed, into eternal fire,
prepared for the devil

For you did not care for me

Eternal Destiny: punishment or life

What can we do as Christ Fellowship to impact our neighbor?

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.

I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.

I was a stranger and you invited me in.

I needed clothes and you clothed me.

I was sick and you looked after me.

I was in prison and you came to visit me.

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

Group Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think it is important for the church to reach out to hurting people in our community? What have been some of your good experiences in showing compassion to people in need?
  2. In Jesus’ story in Matthew 25:31-46, how would you describe the setting from verses 31-32? From the entire story, how would you describe the one on the throne? What are his titles and what does he do?
  3. Jesus draws a huge contrast between the sheep and the goats. Together list as many contrasts as you can find.
  4. What is the basis for the king’s verdict for those on the right and those on the left? What surprises each group as indicated by their questions (verses 37-39, 44)? How does the king answer them?
  5. What is the consequence or outcome for those on the right? Those on the left? How long does each last? Taking the teaching of the entire New Testament into account, on what basis will people go away either to eternal punishment or eternal life?
  6. How can we practically show compassion, such as with the list of six acts that Jesus mentions four times? What are some of the ministries Christ Fellowship has to those in our community? What do you believe God is calling you to do personally?

Family Discussion Questions

  1. What is a community? What communities are you a part of?
  2. Do you think you have any responsibilities to care for the people God has put in your presence?
  3. Read Matthew 25:31-46. Who are the sheep in this passage? Who are the goats?
  4. What did the sheep do? What didn’t the goats do? What rewards did they each receive?
  5. When we help people in need, who are we are helping (verse 40)? How does helping those in need help God?
  6. Read Mark 9:41. Who do we represent when we help the needy in our community? How can we do that?
  7. Who are the hungry and thirsty (“the least of these”) in your immediate community? What will you do to “feed” and give them “water”?
