Group Discussion Questions

  1. What was your home like when you were growing up?
  2. Why do you think it is especially difficult to be Christ-like at home? Conversely, how is the home an especially powerful place to impact others for Christ?
  3. According to Ephesians 6:4 what are people to do? How do we tend to “exasperate” our spouse, children and others we live with?
  4. What are typical parents’ hopes and dreams for their kids? If we really brought up our children in the Lord, how might those hopes and dreams be different?
  5. What are we to do according to Deuteronomy 6:4-6? How important is it to model loving God for impacting our homes? How are you doing at modeling our four practices of a Christ follower: engage God individually, connect in a group, worship in a gathering and impact others?
  6. According to 6:7 we are to talk about God’s truth. When should we do this? How could we practically talk about God and his commands in the ordinary rhythms of life?
  7. According to 6:8-9 we are to visualize God’s commands in creative ways in multiple places. How could the images in those verses correspond to our modern lives? For instance, what might be similar to tying them on our hands or writing them on our door frames? How can we visualize God’s truth today?

Family Discussion Questions

  1. Children: What’s your favorite thing to do with your mom or dad? Parents: What’s your favorite thing to do with your children?
  2. Children: When you’re really old (like 25) what do you think the most important thing in your life will be? Parents: What’s the most important thing in your life?
  3. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. How do you write God’s commandments on your hearts? Activity: Write out these verses on a piece of paper and then cut out the words. Make a game of trying to put them back together again.
  4. How could you “display” God’s Word on the door frames of your home or on your hands?
  5. Read Ephesians 6:4. What are some ways you can bring up your children in the training and instruction of the Lord? How does this reflect Deuteronomy 6:7?
  6. What does “walking along the way” look like?
  7. What do you think about the saying, “Children will catch more from what you do than from what you say?” How does this relate to your personal faith walk as a testimony before your children?
  8. Children: What is your obligation to receive the training from your parents (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1)?
  9. What is your next step in loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength? How about the next step of teaching your children?
