Group Discussion Questions

  1. Where are you from? If you are from multiple places, which one do you most identify with and why?
  2. How does Jesus fulfill the prophecy in Micah 5:2 and 2 Samuel 5:2? Read Numbers 24:17 and Isaiah 60:16 then answer how the star and the wise men in Matthew 2 relate to these Old Testament expectations.
  3. How would you contrast Herod and the Magi’s very different responses to Jesus? Notice their actions and motives. Why do you think Herod was so disturbed? How do we tend to behave and think in Herod-like ways?
  4. What is the second place Jesus is from and how did he get there? How does Egypt relate to Old Testament prophecies and patterns (see Hosea 11:1 and the story of Moses and the Exodus)?
  5. Read Jeremiah 31. How did the cries of the Bethlehem mothers echo the mourning in Ramah in Jeremiah’s day? How does Jesus connect to the hope that Jeremiah gives in chapter 31?
  6. What is the third place Jesus is from? Since the phrase “he would be called a Nazarene” is not a direct quote from anywhere in the Old Testament, what is Matthew saying?
  7. How do Jesus’ three birthplaces demonstrate that he is who he claims to be?
  8. Practically speaking how could we respond to Jesus more like the Magi? Consider behaviors and attitudes.

Family Discussion Questions

  1. If you were king/queen for a day, what kind of gifts would you want to receive?
  2. Read Matthew 2:1-23 together and summarize what is happening.
  3. Why do you think Herod is so upset? In his anger what does he try to do?
  4. What things make you angry? What are we tempted to do when we’re angry? What does anger do to relationships?
  5. What is a prophecy? Read Micah 5:2, Hosea 11:1 and Jeremiah 31:15. How are these prophecies fulfilled in Matthew 2:1-23? How does the fulfillment of prophecy shape your faith?
  6. In what ways does God intervene to “save” Jesus? How did God intervene to save us?
  7. What gifts did the wise men give to Jesus? What is frankincense and myrrh? Why are these fit for a king? Why were they fit for Jesus?
  8. What gifts do you have to offer Jesus (think of your time, talent and treasure)? How will you give them to him? Activity for younger children: Draw a picture as if you were a wise man presenting your gifts to Jesus.
