Outline

Jesus defeats the devil’s temptations to . . .

Self-gratification (physical) over trusting God to provide

“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3-4

Self-protection (mental) over resting in God’s presence

“It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matthew 4:7; Deuteronomy 6:16

Self-promotion (spiritual) over worshipping God alone

“Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Matthew 4:10; Deuteronomy 6:13

Parents, we are gearing the sermons towards 6th grade and above. Promiseland is available for children from age 0 to 5th grade.

Group Discussion Questions

  1. What are some of your most common temptations? What are the most difficult temptations for you to turn down?
  2. What are differences between God testing us and Satan tempting us?
  3. How are the three temptations Jesus faced similar to the temptations Adam and Eve faced in the Garden, and similar to what Israel faced in the wilderness wandering? How are these three temptations fundamental to the kinds of temptations we face?
  4. How does Jesus defeat the temptations (hint: what phrase does he use each time)? Read Ephesians 6:17. How is the Word of God described and in what ways can we use it to defeat temptation?
  5. How would you evaluate your “sword” fighting skills? What could you practically do to improve?
  6. What is first temptation Jesus faced? How do we face similar temptations today? How does Jesus defeat it? How could the truth of Jesus’ quote help us today with those kinds of temptations?
  7. What is the second temptation? How is this temptation related to what Israel did in Exodus 17:1-8? How do we doubt God and try to protect ourselves? How did Jesus defeat the temptation?
  8. What is the third temptation? Relate this one to the serpent’s temptation in the Garden and to what Israel did in the wilderness. How do we face similar temptations to pride and self-promotion? Be specific. How does Jesus counter the temptation?
  9. How will you follow Jesus’ example to defeat the temptations you will face this week?

Family Discussion Questions

    1. What would it be like to be in a desert for 40 days without food or water?
    2. In what areas are you tempted to sin? Why do we sin (Genesis 3; Romans 3:23)?
    3. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Who is the tempter in verse 3? In what three ways does he tempt Jesus? What does the devil use to trick Jesus and how does Jesus respond?
    4. What promise can you see in verse 11? How can Jesus minister to you in times of trial and temptation (1 Peter 5:7; Philippians 4:6-8; Isaiah 26:3; Psalm 91:11; Ephesians 6:17)?
    5. How does this passage change or shape your understanding of Satan? Jesus?
    6. Activity: Draw a picture showing how Jesus uses the truth of God’s Word to defeat the devil.
    7. The “i” in sin stands for what “I” want to do. What specific sin are you going to address this week? How are you going to do that? Who can you ask to help you besides Jesus?
    8. What does 2 Timothy 3:16 say about God’s word? Is there a Bible verse you can memorize this week to help you conquer your temptation?
