We’re going there — we’re going to talk about sexuality, and because we are people guided by the Word, we’re going to the Bible for answers. Discover a fresh biblical view of sexuality and learn how to have gracious, truth-filled conversations on this topic.

Parents, we are gearing the sermons towards 6th grade and above. Promiseland is available for children from age 0 to 5th grade.

What is the role of sex in humanity?

A good gift but not essential for a good life

Creation (Genesis 2) sex is good

            Fall (Genesis 3, 4, 6, 9) sex was distorted

Redemption (Gospels; 1 Corinthians 7) singleness is honored

New creation (Matthew 22:29-30; Revelation 19-22) sex will be surpassed

Sex in marriage  – What’s the point?

Celebrate union (Genesis 2:24; 1 Cor. 7:3-5) to affirm oneness

Procreation (Genesis 1:28) to have kids

Pleasure (Proverbs 5:15–20; Song of Solomon) to enjoy

Show God (Ephesians 5:29–32) to display his loyal, exclusive love

Singleness – Is it better?

Model Jesus (Gospels) to follow our single Savior

Destiny  (Matt 22:29-30) to live today as we will live in eternity

Mission (1 Corinthians 7) to give undistracted devotion

Show God (John 3:16)to display his open, inclusive love

Group Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think “sexuality” is such a sensitive topic to talk about? What concerns or fears do you have about this series? What are your hopes for the study in terms of what will be clarified, addressed or stressed?
  2. Why is sexuality an important topic for us to talk about in terms of our own spiritual growth? Our care for other people? And our witness to unchurched people in our culture? What are some of the biggest questions we are facing in this area?
  3. How would you briefly explain the biblical overview of sexuality that Bruce presented in his sermon in the broad categories of Creation – sex is good, Fall – sex was perverted, Redemption – sex is optional and New Creation – sex will be surpassed? What was most interesting or surprising to you?
  4. Bruce shared that “sex is a good gift but not essential for a good life.” What are implications of this deeper biblical theology of human sexuality for our personal lives? How about implications for our church or group in terms of how we consider each other, whether married or single? What are implications for how we raise our kids in the arena of sexuality?
  5. What’s the point of sex in marriage (Bruce gave four biblical purposes)? How can this richer theology of sex in marriage help those who are married?
  6. What are values of singleness (Bruce gave four values)? How can this richer theology of singleness help those who are single?
  7. Who is God calling you to step out in faith to support? How do you plan to go about it? When will you start?

Family Discussion Questions

  1. What truth do you see in 2 Timothy 3:16-17? In practical terms, what does this scripture tells us? To what aspects of your life do these verses apply? Do you think there are any exceptions?
  2. What purpose do you see for men and women in Genesis 1:26-28 and 2:18-25? How did God describe his creation in Genesis 1:31? Was there anything wrong about it?
  3. Why do people get married? Do you think everyone should? Are there benefits or advantages to not being married (1 Corinthians 7:32-35)?
  4. What does Ephesians 5:22-33 say about the roles of men and women in marriage? How does Paul compare marriage to our relationship with Jesus? What is “the mystery” that Paul refers to in verse 31?
  5. For children, youth and the unmarried: Have you ever thought about your future spouse? What are your hopes and dreams for marriage? What are you looking forward to? What scares you?
  6. Here’s a link to resources to help you take the lead in talking to your children about God’s design for sex:
