Group Discussion Questions

  1. Tell a story of someone you know who was never the same after trusting in Jesus Christ.
  2. How would you describe where you are with Jesus at this point in your life?
  3. Read Luke 10:38-42. How would you contrast Martha and Mary? What did Mary do?
  4. How could you “sit at Jesus’ feet” to listen to him? What change could you make in your life to do more of this?
  5. Scan John 11, focusing on Mary. Why did Jesus delay coming?
  6. How did Mary respond to Jesus? Many people, certainly including Mary, believed in Jesus after he raised Lazarus from the dead. Have you believed in Jesus for your salvation? If you have, share about it.
  7. Read John 12:1-8. What did Mary do at Jesus’ feet? Why are her actions so remarkable?
  8. How can you bow at Jesus’ feet to worship him with extravagant generosity?


Family Discussion Questions

  1. What are some things you have to do today? How do you decide what to do first? What gets done and what gets left undone?
  2. How would you describe Mary’s and Martha’s attitudes toward Jesus in Luke 10:38-42? How does Jesus respond to Martha? Mary?
  3. What truths do we see in Matthew 6:25-34 about worry? How should Mary’s worship of Jesus help you prioritize your day?
  4. Have you ever lost someone you loved dearly? What were your feelings? Read John 11:17-44 out loud as a family. How are Mary and Martha feeling? What about the crowd around Jesus?
  5. Describe Jesus’ response to Mary and Martha. What does this tell you about Jesus? As a Christian how should our faith in Jesus Christ comfort us when we lose a loved one?
  6. How does the story of Lazarus reflect what would happen to Jesus in the coming weeks? Why do you think Jesus delayed coming to raise Lazarus (verse 21)?
  7. What truth does Jesus teach Martha, and us in verses 25-26? What is the promise tied to our belief in Jesus (verse 40)? What was Martha’s response in verse 27? What do you believe about Jesus?
  8. Who do you know that needs to hear the promise of Easter? How will you invite them to hear it?
