Group Discussion Questions

  1. What have been some of your biggest doubts about Christianity? What doubts haunt you now?
  2. Read John 14:1-14. Why is Thomas confused? How does Jesus answer him?
  3. What does Thomas say he needs in order to believe (John 20:25)?
  4. How does Jesus respond to Thomas (John 20:26-27)?
  5. Then how does Thomas respond to Jesus (John 20:28)? What implications do you see in his brief affirmation?
  6. What is Jesus’ concluding blessing (John 20:29)? What is the purpose of John’s Gospel (John 20:30-31)?
  7. Have you believed in Jesus to have life in his name? If so, when? If not, why not?

 

Family Discussion Questions

  1. As you read John 20:24-31 what is at the heart of this passage?
  2. If you had seen all that the disciples had seen in the three years of Jesus’ public ministry, do you think you would have reacted the way Thomas did in verse 25?
  3. What things would you have to see to believe? How does Jesus describe those who believe in him by faith (verse 29)?
  4. What questions or doubts do you have about Jesus? Who he is? Why he came to earth? What he did for us on the cross? What next step can you take to specifically address these questions?
  5. How did Jesus enter the room in verse 26? What did Jesus say to Thomas and what was Thomas’ response? Why did doubting Thomas become believing Thomas?
  6. What is a martyr? How did Thomas die (check Wikipedia)? Do you think he would have died this way for something that was a lie? What or who would you be willing to die for?
  7. How would you describe the story of Easter? Why does John record this story (verse 31)? Do you believe the words John wrote in verse 31?
  8. How are our lives – your life – not the same because of your encounter with Jesus?
