Group Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think so many commitments today are shallow and superficial? Can you think of examples?
  2. How would you compare and contrast the two men who approach Jesus at the edge of the lake (8:18-22)? How does Jesus answer each of them? How might we re-express his answers in today’s terms and context?
  3. How do you think you would respond if you were in the boat with the disciples when the furious storm came? Why?
  4. What do we learn about Jesus from this story (8:23-27)? How could we better handle storms when they come into our lives?
  5. Have you ever had an encounter with supernatural evil, even a demon or the demonic? Share the story.
  6. What do we learn about Jesus from this story (8:28-34)?
  7. Why do you think the townspeople pleaded with Jesus to leave? How do we, too, get overly attached to our “pigs”?

Family Discussion Questions

  1. What is a role model? Who are your role models? What part do they play in your life? Would you always follow them?
  2. What do you think it means to be a disciple of Jesus? Would you call yourself a disciple of Jesus?
  3. Describe what’s happening in Matthew 8:18-23. Who would you expect to follow Jesus in these verses? Who does follow him?
  4. What happened in verses 24-27? How would you feel if you were in the boat? What does Jesus do and what does this say about him?
  5. What does Jesus do in verses 28-34? Who does he save? How does Jesus save us (John 3:16, Acts16:31)?
  6. If you had seen Jesus calm the storm and cleanse men of unclean spirits would you have followed Jesus? Why do you think the teacher didn’t follow him or the townspeople pleaded with him to leave?
