Faith Walking With Jesus, August 9-15

Matthew 14:22-36

Outline

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,  24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Faith hears Jesus in the storm
25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them:

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Faith steps out of the boat and walks to Jesus
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Faith worships Jesus
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Group Discussion Questions

Focus on the questions that are most relevant to your group and skim or skip those that are not at this time.

  1. What storms are you experiencing in your life? What fears are you facing?
  2. What did Jesus do while the disciples were in the boat on the lake? What actions did he take in order to get alone to pray?
  3. How are you doing in taking regular time to engage God individually in the Word and prayer? What is your current pattern? What actions could you take to improve it?
  4. When they first saw him, what three things did Jesus say to the disciples as he was walking on the water? How can those statements by Jesus help you with what you are facing right now?
  5. What do think it might have felt like to be Peter stepping out of the boat to walk on the water toward Jesus in the storm?
  6. What might be your metaphorical “boat”? And what might it look for you to step out of your boat onto the water? Is there something you sense God calling you to do that might be scary or overwhelming to you?
  7. What do the disciples do when Jesus gets in the boat? Who do you understand Jesus to be? How do you worship him?
