  2. What do you fear over the holidays, in general?
  3. Read Luke 1:5-7. What fears do you think Zechariah struggled with? What wonderful news did the angel share with him? What do you learn about Jesus?
  4. Read Matthew 1:18-25. What fears might Joseph have faced? What was the angel’s good news to him? What do you learn about Jesus?
  5. Read Luke 1:26-38. What fears might Mary have faced? What is angel’s message to her? What more do you learn about Jesus?
  6. What parallels do you see among the three angel encounters?
  7. What is the Holy Spirit impressing on you from these three biblical passages?

Outline

An Angel comes to Zechariah (Luke 1:5-17)

“Do not be ­­­­­afraid.”

Fulfilling prophecy, John, filled with the Holy Spirit, will come in the spirit of Elijah to prepare the way for the Lord. (Malachi 3)

An Angel comes to Joseph (Matthew 1:18-25)

“Do not be ­­­­­afraid.”

Fulfilling prophecy, Jesus, who will be conceived by the Holy Spirit in a virgin, is Immanuel (God with us), to save us from our sin. (Isaiah 7)

An Angel comes to Mary (Luke 1:26-38)

            “Do not be ­­­­­afraid.”

Fulfilling prophecy, Jesus by the Holy Spirit will come as the Son of the Most High, to reign on the throne of David in a never-ending kingdom. (2 Sam 7)
