Connect In A Group, Dec. 31- Jan. 6

Discussion Questions

  1. Share some of the ways God has blessed and made life better by providing opportunities to enjoy healthy Christian community.
  2. When Jesus prayed for those of us who are believers today (recorded in John 17:20-23), why do you think he emphasized unity among his followers along with our witness to the world? Discuss how these two are related.
  3. In our contemporary culture with multiple demands on our time, the need to maintain our pace of life and our hesitation to commit to relationships, is “going it alone” in the Christian life a viable option for intimacy with God and joy in life? Why or why not?
  4. Discuss Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s quote: “Whoever cannot be alone should beware of community; whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone.” Consider this in light of the expectations we might carry into each context. Also, how does this relate to the first two practices of a Christ Follower that we’ve discussed – Engaging God Individually and Connecting in a Group?
  5. What effect can an experience of shallow or self-centered community have on us personally and on the groups in which we participate? What effect does this have on our witness to outsiders?
  6. What are some concrete things you can do to ensure that the Christian community to which you belong is functioning fully as God intended?

Four Practices of a Christ Follower (Expanded)

  • Engage the personal God of the Bible individually
  • Connect in a group to experience biblical community
  • Impact Others with the love of Christ
  • Worship the living God in a gathering of believers

Biblical Community is where we engage God by connecting in a group

  1. Jesus Prayer for Community (John 17:20-21)
  1. The One Another Teachings in the New Testament
  1. The Rhythm of Time Alone and Time with People (Galatians 6:2-5)
